Meeting with the Council of District Representatives

On February 20th and 21st members of the Council of District Representatives (CDR) from around the province gathered in Toronto to participate in the year’s final CDR meeting. The full agenda was posted in last week’s e-zine. Guest speakers addressed the issues of Catholic education and the Canadian constitution, supporting aboriginal youth and Bill 212: a year later. The Executive Council appreciates the input given by the CDRs on pension designation and the 2009-2010 budget. I encourage all members to attend local association meetings and to watch for highlights from the CDR meeting that are forthcoming from your representative.

Kevin Feehan, a constitutional lawyer shared his insights with the group regarding the importance of Catholic education in the history of Canada. He sighted the fact that the fathers of Confederation created Canada only if the rights to Catholic education were guaranteed. He goes on to say, “Catholic education, and in particular, publicly funded Catholic education is a part of the heart, soul and history of Canada. Its existence contributes to the variety, divergence and strength of education in the country. Its insistence on a Christ-centred, fully permeated Catholic atmosphere based upon the whole person development of the child has been fundamental in the evolution and development of Canadian society.” For the full report click here.

Today we begin the holy season of Lent, a time in which we are challenged to renew our commitment to live as Jesus asks. As leaders in our Catholic schools our days are very full – full of important work! During this holy season of Lent, let us remember to take time in the fullness of our days to invite God into the presence of our lives and our school communities.

O Jesus, you place on my forehead
the sign of your saving Cross:
“Turn from sin and be faithful to the gospel.”
How can I turn from sin unless I turn to you?

You speak, you raise your hand,
You touch my mind and call my name,
“Turn to the Lord your God again.”

These days of your favor
leave a blessing as you pass
on me and all your people.
Turn to us, Lord God,
and we shall turn to you.
