PRESIDENT'S JOURNAL

Update on the Institute for Education Leadership (IEL)

The IEL was established in 2006. It is a virtual institute comprised of the principal associations, supervisory officer associations, directors of education and ministry personnel devoted to tri-level leadership and research related to educational leadership. It released its Succession Planning document in December 2008. An executive summary was mailed to all school boards in January. A copy was provided to the CDRs at their February meeting.  The IEL is currently focusing on collecting and distributing best practices about succession planning to assist boards in the development of their succession plans.

Other work of the Institute included the development of the Leadership Framework. CPCO partnered with OCSOA (Ontario Catholic Supervisory Officers' Association)  within IEL to develop the Catholic Leadership Framework (CLF). CPCO has delivered introductory workshops of the CLF in all but one Catholic board in Ontario this school year. The hope is that the document will inspire a shared vision of leadership in schools and boards. It will help to promote a common language that fosters an understanding of leadership and of what it means to be a leader. It identifies competencies and practices that describe effective leadership, and should guide the design and implementation of training and development of new leaders. To that end, the Catholic Principals’ Council of Ontario’s PQP courses were revised in the summer of 2008 to reflect the Catholic Leadership Framework.

This year, I was struck by the key role that CPCO plays in the success of the IEL. Without the CPCO professional staff at the table, the organization would certainly be less effective.
