PRESIDENT'S JOURNAL

Catholic Education: A National Conversation

Last week I had the timely opportunity to attend a national conference hosted by the Canadian Catholic School Trustees’ Association entitled, Catholic Education: A National Conversation. The subtheme of the conference was… “A sower went out to sow…” . How fitting that this historical conference devoted to discussion on how to promote and protect Catholic education in our country was held in our beautiful capital city of Ottawa.

Four hundred participants from across Canada and from various sectors of the Catholic community came together to listen to engaging speakers and to hear inspiring vignettes from Catholic students, parents, teachers, and administrators. More importantly, as participants we engaged in challenging conversations that provided us with the knowledge and language to better articulate the important position that Catholic education holds in making up the fabric of Canadian society.

First Stop - Renfrew CDSB

On September 24, 2008 I ventured out to Calabogie in the Ottawa Valley for my first association visit with the principals, vice-principals and senior administration from the Renfrew CDSB. The Renfrew administrators, while known for always being the first to break in the “rookie” president, were a very relaxed, welcoming, and collaborative group. It was great to be in their midst for even a short time.

As president, I am indeed privileged to have the chance to meet principals and vice-principals from around the province during my field visits, at meetings and various conferences and events. Your feedback as to how well CPCO is meeting your needs and advocating on your behalf is key to our success. While most comments about our organization are favourable, it is important to hear from those members who are disengaged for whatever reason, and to reach out to them. To that end, you are encouraged to e-mail or call me directly at CPCO with your questions and concerns.

Transition to Interim Executive Director

On October 1, 2008 Dan Tighe the Interim Executive Director will begin his first day of work at CPCO. He will work closely with Lou Rocha, the staff, and the Executive Council during this time of transition. Meetings with staff, the Ministry, business partners and Catholic partners are all part of his transition plan over the next few weeks. We welcome Dan back to CPCO and look forward to supporting him in his role.
