Several members have made inquiries regarding the October 1st Pension Communiqué which describes changes in the pension benefits effective January 1, 2009. Those changes are described on the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP) website. Members have inquired about our voice in pension decisions and about specific details of the changes.
Although CPCO receives information from the Ontario Teachers’ Federation (OTF) and OTF has addressed CPCO members at various times including our most recent Employment Services Seminar, it is a sad reality that since 1997 and the passage of Bill 160, CPCO and the other principals’ associations have neither a seat on the Pension Board nor any say in the proceedings and decisions made by the Board.
The CPCO President is invited to attend the Pension Forum each spring and reports information in the electronic magazine. In addition each OTF Communiqué is forwarded to all members via this electronic magazine as soon as it arrives.
Finally, CPCO has invited Jeff Holmes, Director of Pension & Economic Affairs at OTF to write an article for the winter issue of Principal Connections on pension matters. He has also been invited to address our Council of District Representatives in November. In the meantime I would encourage all CPCO members to refer to the OTPP website for details on recent changes, www.otpp.com.
