PRESIDENT'S JOURNAL

Meeting with the Council of District Representatives

On November 20, 21, 2009, members of the Council of District Representatives (CDR) from around the province gathered in Toronto to participate in CPCO’s bi-annual CDR meetings. The full agenda was posted in the November 18, 2009 e-zine as well as posted on the CPCO website. Highlights from the 2 days included a very engaging keynote address by Archbishop Collins of Toronto, a very informative slide presentation by Eric Roher on Bill 157, presentations by CPCO’s professional staff regarding member surveys, website development and professional learning opportunities, as well as a presentation by the Ontario College of Teachers. District reps also formed working groups to provide input into three areas:

  1. Coping with the Ministry school guidelines regarding H1N1;
  2. Use of retired members in local associations and at the provincial level; and
  3. Supervision responsibilities in schools.

The results of these discussions are being collated and will form part of the President’s Report at the CDR meeting in February, 2010.

In an earlier newsletter I outlined the responsibilities of the CDR, emphasizing the key role they play in communicating information about what is happening provincially with their local membership and informing the executive council of the many issues facing Catholic principals and vice-principals in Ontario. I wish to thank the CDRs for their attention and positive feedback for the time together and for their input and participation throughout the meeting days. I recognize that the time away from their schools was not convenient and likely added to their workload.

I encourage all members to attend local association meetings and to watch for information from District Reps regarding highlights of the meetings.

Being a Catholic school principal or vice-principal is not merely about passing on a message. It is about leading your communities to an encounter with Christ.
~ Archbishop Collins, November 21, 2009

Catholic school leaders need a sense of moving forward and context… to live the struggle while seeing the glory.
